How to Reserve

Young travelers ages 5 through 12, traveling alone, may not book their flight reservations online. All reservations must be booked by calling Alaska Airlines at 1-800-ALASKAAIR (1-800-252-7522) or Horizon Air at 1-800-547-9308.

Age Limitations

Children aged 5, and up to their 13th birthday are considered unaccompanied minors unless traveling with an adult aged 18 or older (exceptions will be made for birth parents under the age of 18 traveling with their child). When children aged 5 through 12 travel with another child aged 13 through 17, they are still considered unaccompanied minors and all unaccompanied minor travel rules apply.

Ages 0 through 4 years old

 

Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air will not, under any circumstances, accept children under the age of five for travel without an adult 18 years of age or older (exceptions will be made for birth parents under the age of 18 traveling with their child).

 

Ages 5 through 7 years old

 

Permitted on nonstop and direct flights only.

 

Service fees required.

 

Guardian information required at time of booking reservation.

 

If your child has just turned five, or could be perceived as being younger than five years old, bring proof of the child's age.

 

Ages 8 through 12 years old

 

Permitted on nonstop, direct, and connecting flights.

 

Service fees required.

 

Guardian information required at time of booking reservation.

 

 

Ages 13 through 17 years old

 

Permitted on nonstop, direct, and connecting flights.

 

Service fees required if unaccompanied minor service requested.

 

Guardian information required if unaccompanied minor service requested.

 

 

Ages 18 years and older

 

No restrictions

Airline Service Fees

Airline Service Fees will be collected for all children ages 5 through 12 traveling alone. Airline assistance and fees for teenagers age 13 through 17 are optional.

The following fees apply to Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air itineraries only. Codeshare itineraries may have slightly higher fees.

  • US$30.00 / CA$45 one way - When all travel is on a nonstop or direct flight. Applies to both domestic and international travel on Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air only.
  • US$60.00 / CA$90 one way - When travel involves a connecting flight. Applies to both domestic and international travel on Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air only.
  • One fee will be collected for up to 3 children traveling together, when being met by the same person at their destination.
  • Fees are one way and will be collected in each direction.
  • Children who are Mileage Plan MVP members, will have the unaccompanied minor fee waived when traveling alone on Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air itineraries only.

Flight Time Restrictions

Children ages 5 up to 13 years old, traveling alone will not be allowed to travel on flights departing between 9:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. or on connections to the last flight of the day out of any city. This policy is in place to avoid potential mishaps involving delayed or canceled flights. Exceptions may be made if the flight is the only flight of the day and no weather problems have been forecast for the child's destination. Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air reserves the right to postpone travel when poor weather conditions exist.

Teens age 13 up to 17 years old have no flight time restrictions, unless unaccompanied minor service has been requested.

Reservations and Information

In order to provide your child with the necessary special attention required, we ask that you call Alaska Airlines at 1-800-ALASKAAIR (1-800-252-7522) or Horizon Air at 1-800-547-9308 to provide the required travel information in advance. When making reservations, advise the agent that your child will be traveling alone. If possible, arrange for non-stop or direct flights.

Required Travel Information

For the safety of your child, you will be asked to complete an Unaccompanied Minor Envelope at the airport. The following information about your child, you, the guardian(s) assisting in flight connections, and the guardian(s) meeting your child at their destination is required:

  • Child's name and age.
  • Your name and relationship to the child.
  • Name and relationship, of the person(s) bringing your child to the airport, assisting in any connections, and meeting your child at the final destination.
  • Primary telephone numbers required, (business and cell phone numbers are requested).

At the Airport

Only one guardian will be allowed through the security check point with the unaccompanied minor(s). All guardians must obtain a Special Service Pass from the ticket counter in order to be allowed access through the security check point. Due to additional airport security, when meeting your child you should allow up to two hours to obtain the Special Service Pass. The Special Service Pass may not be available when your child travels to and from Canada and Mexico due to customs and immigration requirements.

My Child is a Mileage Plan MVP

Children that have attained MVP status in Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan are not required to pay unaccompanied minor airline service fees when traveling on Alaska Airlines or Horizon Air itineraries.

International Flight Restrictions

Children traveling to and from Canada, and Mexico are required to have the same passport and visa documentation as adults. In addition, children may be required to have a letter of consent, depending on the destination.

INTO CANADA: Children under 18 traveling unaccompanied should have a letter of consent signed by a custodial parent or legal guardian for travel to Canada.

INTO MEXICO: Children under 18 traveling unaccompanied must have a notarized letter of consent from either both parents or both guardians for travel to Mexico.
